脳の固定は依頼者の責任で行います。ですから、固定された脳が私たちの研究室に搬入されます。今回の脳はホルマリンに満ちた小さな容器に入って運ばれてきました。脳が容器にぴっちり入っていて取り出すのが大変でした。移動用に小さな容器に脳を入れたのかと思いましたが、脳は容器の形に変形していたので、どうやらこの小さな容器で固定されていたようです。これでは固定液の量は不十分です。案の定、脳の内側の色はピンク色です。固定が不十分な色合いでした。このような脳ではきれいな標本を作製できないことがあります。残念ながら、このようなケースは、まれではありません。

The fixation of brains are performed on our clients' responsibilities, therefore fixed brains are brought to our lab. This time, the brain was brought in a small container full of formalin. It was difficult to take the brain out from the container because it was squeezed in the container. The brain might be put in such a small container just for transport. But the brain was deformed into the container shape, so it must be fixed in this container. The amount of formalin was not enough for fixation. As expected, the inside color of the brain was pinkish. This is because fixation was inadequate. Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon case.
